Menées par Emmeline Pankhurst, elles mirent en œuvre des moyens (manifestations, interruptions de meetings, attentats, incendies criminels, grèves de la faim) qui eurent finalement raison du Premier ministre Asquith, lequel fit adopter par le Parlement, en 1917, un projet de loi accordant le droit de vote à certaines catégories de femmes (les femmes mariées, les femmes au foyer et les femmes diplômées âgées d'au moins 30 ans).
